Meet the animals

Respect first

Connection may growwhen the animal sets the pace.

Their comfort, boundaries, health, and daily care come first. Any interaction depends on the animal, the day, and team guidance.

The animal story

Shannon shares how the Ranch’s animal story began.

Many animals came through rescue or retirement paths, while others arrived differently. Not every animal at the Ranch is a rescue.

This recorded message shares Shannon’s vision. The Ranch team confirms current details and next steps.

Horses

Luna-Bell, a white horse, grazing in a tree-lined pasture.

My story

Luna-Bell is a purebred Percheron who found her forever home at The Russell Recovery Ranch through a local rescue. They believed she could become a wonderful addition to our programs, and we welcomed her with a commitment to give her the care, patience, and belonging she deserved. Before coming to the Ranch, she had worked as a plow horse on an Amish farm. The history shared with us described severe starvation, wounds, neglected hooves, and repeated breeding. She had continued working even while her needs were not being met. Her arrival marked the beginning of a different chapter—one where her well-being comes first.

Personality and favorite things

One of the most joyful parts of Luna-Bell’s progress has been watching her find companionship. She loves being with her pasture buddies and has become especially fond of our yak and Doc Holiday, our miniature pony—her boyfriend, as we affectionately call him. Those everyday friendships are an important part of the home she has found here. She also enjoys being brushed, giving us quiet opportunities to spend time with her at a pace she can accept.

Life at the Ranch

We have seen tremendous progress in Luna-Bell’s weight gain, and it has been a privilege to watch her settle into life with her pasture friends. Still, trust takes time. Sudden movements near her face can make her flinch, and baths and fly-repellent applications require patience, creativity, and attention to her comfort. We respect her boundaries and adjust our approach rather than rushing her. At times, we still see a sadness in her eyes that reminds us to be gentle with the history she carries. We love Luna-Bell deeply and celebrate every step forward. Her place here is a forever home, with room to rest, build friendships, and continue making progress in her own time.
