Meet the animals

Respect first

Connection may growwhen the animal sets the pace.

Their comfort, boundaries, health, and daily care come first. Any interaction depends on the animal, the day, and team guidance.

The animal story

Shannon shares how the Ranch’s animal story began.

Many animals came through rescue or retirement paths, while others arrived differently. Not every animal at the Ranch is a rescue.

This recorded message shares Shannon’s vision. The Ranch team confirms current details and next steps.

My story

Dutton is a draft cross standing approximately 17 hands high, with a big presence and an even bigger heart. He came to The Russell Recovery Ranch through rescue, with the hope that he could become part of our programs and workshops while experiencing the love and care he deserved. Before arriving, he had been used to pull wagons in an Amish setting. He was underweight, and the history shared with us described hard work and severe abuse. More than 100 scars marked his body. We welcomed him with a commitment to give him a different kind of life—one where his comfort and well-being come first.

Personality and favorite things

Today, Dutton is an affectionate cuddle bug who comes running for attention. He loves his daily brushing, plenty of affection, and a good snack—but he has opinions about the menu! Apples are not his favorite, although he enjoys plenty of other treats. Getting to know those little preferences has been one of the joys of watching his personality shine. He also likes to think he is the one in charge of the pasture. At least, the ladies let him believe that!

Life at the Ranch

Within his first three months at the Ranch, we saw a remarkable change. Dutton was rolling, running, and showing a spark of life in his eyes again. Those moments meant so much to us: we were seeing him enjoy the freedom to simply be a horse. After a year here, his progress has been wonderful to witness. He has gained weight, looks incredible, and seeks out the affection that has become part of his everyday life. The final photograph in his gallery shows how well he is doing today, resting comfortably with a pasture companion. We celebrate both his physical progress and the bright, loving personality that has emerged along the way. Dutton is deeply loved here, and his story continues with care, companionship, and plenty of brushing.
